Osawa Onsen: Riverside Baths & Nearby Hotels

Osawa is a hot-spring inn complex in Hanamaki’s western valley. Spend a long afternoon at its river baths. Day admission covers Tojiya and Sansuikaku.

The spring and its history

Osawa’s alkaline simple spring emerges at 51.3°C with a pH of 9.0. The inn complex stands at 181 Osawa, Yuguchi. Miyazawa Kenji returned here repeatedly. The poet and sculptor Takamura Kotaro praised Osawa’s water during his seven years in Hanamaki.

The Kenji sites at Takamatsu are near Shin-Hanamaki, a road journey from Osawa. At Takamura’s museum, you can see his sculpture Hand and Chieko’s paper pictures. His small cottage stands on the same grounds, protected by an enclosing building and a later steel-frame structure.

The river and indoor baths

At Osawa-no-Yu, you bathe outdoors beside the flowing river. Men and women share this pool outside the women-only hour. The women-only Kawabe no Yu is also right beside the river. Kawabe no Yu may close during severe winter cold.

Some baths may close for cleaning, and staff may limit admission when the baths are full. Visitors with tattoos are refused admission. At nearby Namari, you bathe standing in a natural-rock pool. The Yumoto hotel baths are on a different bus route.
